why not? bond is an asset, gold is an asset, just as equity is an asset. a balanced portfolio is the safest.
diversifying among different assets is real diversification. diversifying among large/small caps, value/growth, different sectors is not real diversification. the correlation between gold/bond/stock is very low, which makes them a perfect basket. the whole package gives you OK and steady returns, enough to beat inflation, at the same time reducing std dev by a lot.
one could argue that gold is better than commodity. I can give you 10 reasons in a heartbeat. but I am not a gold bug. I own gold because I like its being uncorrelated to other assets that I hold, and its extreme sensitivity to any sign of inflation, as well as instability. it also hedges the rate risk of my long term bonds.
in breif, Iam a financially conservative guy, therefore I use a conservative investment strategy, which serves me well so far. |
