Earlier today we highlighted the average performance of the S&P 500 on the Friday before Memorial Day. Below we highlight the index's performance during the shortened Memorial Day work week. As shown, average returns for Memorial Day week have been very strong. Since the federal law went into effect in 1971 for Memorial Day to fall on the last Monday of May, the S&P 500 has averaged a gain of 0.84% during the week with positive returns 67% of the time. And the last four Memorial Day weeks have been positive, even in the midst of the 2008 bear market.
