HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Australia's jobless rate showed a surprise decline in April, easing to 5.4% from 5.7% in March, according to data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics said Thursday.
The number of individuals in full-time work rose by 49,100 to 7.67 million in April from 7.62 million in March. Part-time employment fell by 21,800 to 3.13 million for the reporting month from 3.15 million.
Expectations were for the economy to shed 25,000 jobs in the reporting month, which would have sent the jobless rate to 5.9%.
The number of individuals classified as unemployed totaled 614,600, easing by 35,300. The statistics bureau said the participation rate, or number of working age people at work or seeking work, fell to 65.4% from 65.5%.
