Read an article here a few days ago about current market volume much lower than 2007 peak. One thing to bear in mind is that all banks has drastically reduced proprietary trading (don't know how much it counts, but should be a significant part of total trade volume). The general trend on volume is downward in a wind-down / more regulation process.
