Leaving aside the arguments about the stock that not only is biggest in market capitalization but also the one that incites the most ardent passions, signs of topping have been apparent elsewhere among technology stocks and the broad market. In other words, it's not just Apple.

As veteran technical market analyst John Mendelson points out in his latest weekly missive from ISI Group, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index -- better known by its ticker symbol, SOX -- has traced out a pattern of lower highs ever since peak back in February, 2011. Moreover, he looks for the SOX to reverse its summer bounce to retest its lows set last June.

At that point, values will present themselves -- but only to investors with cash available to take advantage of them.
