The real problem with Romney's tax is not just the tax rate. It's his ability to profit from political power and to retain the profit through a tax shelter.
1) The majority of Romney's wealth is in his IRA account, valued in between $100M and $200M. Not just an "Traditional" IRA, but a "Self Directed" IRA, through which he can invest in "businesses" directly.
2) By rules, an individual can only "save" $5000 ($6000 over age of 65) per year into his IRA account. So over a period, say 35 years, Romney could contribute a maximum of $180,000 into his IRA. If his account value is $180M currently, he has managed to make x1000 type of profit so far, tax deferred.
3) He pays tax only on "distribution" (money taken out of IRA) from his account. And the distribution is counted as "ordinary income", not "capital gains".
The real question to be asked is how Romney could have accumulated his wealth so quickly through his political career. Maybe 官僚资本主义 is at play, just like so many Chinese officials, and Romney may have dwarfed 薄熙来、谷开来 after all. |
