Market Maker is just a broker. They are just inter-medium of buyer and seller.

In HTer's words,  MM they refer to financial institutions I think. They are the real big moneys like MF, HF, IB, Pension funds and etc.,  plus a lot robot traders nowday.

Like yesterday,  you see there were more and more selling orders came in the last hour,  almost non-stop till the colse.  Those huge volume selling demands of course were aggregated from all those big money funds...
