yes, less people participate in DEC 31  Options.  also  SPY pay distribution 0.59 on DEC 31 2009,  that means  SPY will drop 0.59 on DEC 31?

no, pay date is not ex-dividend date.
SPY already adjusted for 0.59 on 12/18.  see yahoo "historical price".

0.59 is the amount, (I don't know whether to call it dividend or distribution), but the amount has already been adjusted on 12/18.  
you are mixing the concept of ex-dividend date (the date you are qualified to get the 0.59) and pay date (actual payout date).

(the date you are qualified to get the 0.59) -------means if you have SPY by end-of-day 12/17, you are qualified to get 0.59 and it will be paid to you on Dec31.  If you bot SPY on 12/18 morning, you are not qualified to get 0.59.

again, no jump on SPY due to 0.59.
compare ES(SPX) and SPY on Dec17-DEC18, you will see the jump there.
