Two ex-cabinet ministers are calling for a secret ballot on Gordon Brown's leadership, only months before a general election must be called.

Patricia Hewitt and Geoff Hoon have written to Labour MPs saying the issue must be sorted out "once and for all".

They said the party was "deeply divided" and "grumbling".

Downing St said Mr Brown was "getting on with the job", while the leader of the Parliamentary Labour Party said the call "has very little support".

Senior Labour sources told the BBC the move was "completely unconstitutional" although another Brown critic, Barry Sheerman, said a vote could be held at next Monday's weekly meeting of Labour MPs in Parliament.

Jan. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Bill Gross, who runs the world’s biggest mutual fund at Pacific Investment Management Co., said asset markets in the U.S. and U.K. may suffer as governments withdraw stimulus measures.

“Most ‘carry’ trades in credit, duration, and currency space may be at risk in the first half of 2010 as the markets readjust to the absence of their ‘sugar daddy,’” Gross said in a commentary posted on Newport Beach, California-based Pimco’s Website today.

The weakening U.S. fiscal outlook may continue to push Treasury yields up faster than German bunds, Gross said. Projected increases in Treasury borrowing contrast with the fiscal outlook in Germany where a constitutional amendment has mandated a balanced budget for the country by 2016.

Germany is Pimco’s “favorite” place to invest at the moment, Gross said in an interview on Bloomberg Radio.

Gross, citing a report by the International Monetary Fund, said “The U.S., Japan and U.K. will experience ‘structural’ deficit increases of 4 percent to 5 percent” of gross domestic product during the period from 2007 through 2014. “Germany will move in the other direction,” he wrote.

The end of the Federal Reserve’s $300 billion program of Treasury debt purchases will make it more difficult for the U.S. to raise funds without pushing bond yields higher, Gross said. Yields may rise as much as 40 basis points on 10-year U.S. notes, Gross said.
