Gartley pattern

The Gartley 222 is a very powerful, multi-dimensional pattern. It is called a Gartley 222 because it is found in H.M. Gartley’s book, Profits in the Stock Market, on page 222. I will simply refer to this pattern as the “Gartley.” The important features of the Gartley are the specific location of the various points: X,A,B,C and D. The X-A leg is the largest price move in the pattern. It is followed by a counter move of A to B. The first leg, A to B, sets up the potential AB=CD, which is crucial to the completion of the pattern and to the indication of the reversal zone. After a brief and smaller B to C retracement, the C to D leg is established. A precise calculation of the AB=CD will provide a significant potential reversal point. Ideal Gartley The ideal Gartley set-up will be defined by specific Fibonacci retracements. One of the most important numbers in the pattern is the completion of point D at the 0.786 of XA. Although the price action might exceed this number slightly, it should not exceed point X. The pattern is a nice set-up, especially with the convergence of an AB=CD.”

The Gartley Pattern™, was outlined by H.M. Gartley in his book Profits in the Stock Market, published in 1935.
Although the pattern is named “The Gartley,” the book did not discuss specific Fibonacci retracements! It was not until “The Harmonic Trader” was released that the specific retracements of the B point at a .618 and the D point at a .786 were assigned to the pattern.
There are others who have assigned Fibonacci retracements to this framework. However, they use a variety of Fibonacci numbers at the B and D points. Despite these variations, the Fibonacci retracements that yield the most reliable reversals are the .618 at the B point and the .786 at the D point. Furthermore, the pattern should possess a distinct AB=CD pattern that converges in the same area as the 0.786 XA retracement and the BC projection (either 1.27 or 1.618).
The most critical aspect of the Gartley™ is the B point retracement, which must be at a 0.618 of the XA leg. Read more about the pattern at this link: The Great Gartley™ Controversy.

Butterfly pattern

The structure of the Butterfly pattern … requires a specific alignment of Fibonacci measurements at each point within the structure. Most important, a mandatory 0.786 retracement of the XA leg as the B point is the defining element of an Ideal Butterfly Pattern and it acts as the primary measuring point to define a specific Potential Reversal Zone (PRZ). In many ways, the Ideal Butterfly Pattern is like the Gartley Pattern because it requires a specific B point retracement and possesses a tighter array of Fibonacci ratios within the structure. Specifically, the Butterfly incorporates a 1.27 XA projection with a “tame” BC projection, which is usually only a 1.618. In addition, the Butterfly usually possesses an equivalent AB=CD pattern or an alternate 1.27AB=CD pattern. Although the equivalent AB=CD is a minimum requirement, valid Butterfly structures rarely exceed the alternate 1.27 AB=CD completion point.”

The Butterfly Pattern®, The general extension structure of the Butterfly Pattern® was discovered by Bryce Gilmore. However, the exact alignment of ratios was defined in Scott Carney’s 1998 book, “The Harmonic Trader.”
This has become the industry standard for the structure. Scott’s ideal Butterfly Pattern® requires specific Fibonacci ratios to validate the structure.
These measurements include a mandatory 0.786 retracement of the XA leg at the B point, which defines a more precise Potential Reversal Zone (PRZ) and more significant trading opportunities. Also, the Butterfly pattern® must include an AB=CD pattern™ to be a valid signal.
Frequently, the AB=CD Pattern™ will possess an extended CD leg that is 1.27 or 1.618 of the AB leg. Although this is an important requirement for a valid trade signal, the most critical number in the pattern is the 1.27 XA leg. The XA calculation is usually complemented by an extreme (2.00, 2.24, 2.618) BC projection.
These numbers create a specific Potential Reversal Zone (PRZ) that can yield powerful reversals, especially when the pattern is in all-time (new highs/new lows) price levels.

Crab pattern

The Crab is a precise Harmonic pattern that I discovered in 2000. The Crab is a distinct 5-point extension structure that utilizes a 1.618 projection of the XA leg exclusively. This is the most critical aspect of the pattern and the defining level in the Potential Reversal Zone (PRZ). The extreme (2.618, 3.14, 3.618) projection of the BC compliments the 1.618 XA extension. In addition, the Crab primarily utilizes an alternate AB=CD to compliment the PRZ. Although a minimum AB=CD completion is necessary for a valid structure, the alternate 1.27 or 1.618 calculation are the most frequent cases. In fact, the 1.618 AB=CD pattern is the most common alternate calculation utilized in the structure. It is important to note that the alternate AB=CD pattern within the Crab is the least important number in the PRZ. The combination of the 1.618 projection of the XA leg and the extreme BC projection usually creates a distinct range for the completion of the pattern. In fact, the AB=CD calculation is probably the least important in the Crab than all other patterns. Although the AB=CD structure is less significant in the case of the Crab, the pattern should still possess a distinct symmetry. Due to the extremity of the projections utilized in the completion of the pattern, the Crab frequently experiences sharp price action and dramatic reversals. It is quite common for price action to possess extreme ranges, quickly testing the Crab PRZ during the reversal. In fact, the price action experienced in Crab pattern completions is usually the most extreme of all of the patterns. Despite the typically severe reversals, the focus of the pattern’s completion should examine the 1.618 XA projection.”

The Crab Pattern™, is a Harmonic pattern™ discovered by Scott Carney in 2001.
The critical aspect of this pattern is the tight Potential Reversal Zone created by the 1.618 of the XA leg and an extreme (2.24, 2.618, 3.14, 3.618) projection of the BC leg but employs an 0.886 retracement at the B point unlike the regular version that utilizes a 0.382-0.618 at the mid-point. The pattern requires a very small stop loss and usually volatile price action in the Potential Reversal Zone.

Deep crab pattern

The Deep Crab pattern evolved from two patterns—invalid Bat patterns and a specific type of Crab pattern—that I developed as a further refinement of the basic structure. The Deep Crab is similar to the original Crab pattern, as it is a 5-point extension structure that utilizes exclusively a 1.618 XA projection for the defining level in the Potential Reversal Zone (PRZ).The difference can be found at the B point which must be an 0.886 retracement. In fact, the Deep Crab pattern usually possesses a B point that is beyond the 0.886 level but it does not violate the initial point (X). The 0.886 B point requirement is special to the Deep Crab. When the structure is in the midst of completing the CD leg, the violation of the B point AND the X point typically creates a situation of severe price action. In essence, the price action is violating two important prior support or resistance points. When this happens, the result is frequently a sharp move that quickly extends to the 1.618 XA projection. Another difference in the Deep Crab pattern is the AB=CD structure. The AB=CD pattern is a more important consideration in the Deep Crab, although the structure typically possesses the 1.27AB=CD alternate variation. However, it is common for these structures to possess equivalent AB=CD patterns in certain circumstances.”

Bat pattern

The Bat pattern is a precise harmonic pattern that I discovered in 2001. The Bat pattern is probably the most accurate pattern in the entire Harmonic Trading arsenal. The pattern possesses many distinct elements that define an excellent Potential Reversal Zone (PRZ). The pattern typically represents a deep retest of support or resistance that can frequently be quite sharp. Quick reversals from Bat pattern PRZs are quite common. In fact, valid reversals from Bat patterns frequently possess price action that is quite extreme. The pattern incorporates the powerful 0.886XA retracement, as the defining element in the Potential Reversal Zone (PRZ). The B point retracement must be less than a 0.618, preferably a 0.50 or 0.382 of the XA leg. The most ideal B point alignment is the 50% retracement of the XA leg. The B point is one of the primary ways to differentiate a Bat from a Gartley pattern. If a pattern is forming and the B point aligns at a 0.50 of the XA leg, it is likely to be a Bat. The Bat utilizes a BC projection that is at least 1.618. The BC projection can be as much as 2.618. However, the most ideal BC projections in a Bat pattern are a 1.618 or a 2.0. It is important to note that the BC projection must not be a 1.27, as anything less than a 1.618 BC projection invalidates the structure. Furthermore, the 1.27 BC projections are usually found in Gartley structures. The AB=CD pattern within the Bat distinguishes the structure, as well. This pattern is usually extended and ideally possesses a 1.27AB=CD calculation. However, the equivalent AB=CD pattern serves as a minimum requirement for any Bat to be a valid set-up. It is an incredibly accurate pattern and requires a smaller stop loss.”

Alternate Bat pattern

The origin of the alternate Bat pattern resulted from many frustrated and failed trades of the standard framework. The standard Bat pattern is defined by the B point that is less than a 0.618 retracement of the XA leg. Typically, the best structures employ a 50 percent retracement at the midpoint. Although there’s room for interpretation and other ratios in the standard Bat pattern, I began the notice a peculiarity in those M and W-type structures that possessed a 0.382 retracement or less at the mid-point frequently resulted in an eventual completion that was slightly beyond the expected 0.886 retracement in the standard framework. In many cases before I became aware of this alternate alignment, I would execute trades at the 0.886 retracement within the standard Bat pattern only to close the trade for a loss due to the lack of a reversal in the projected harmonic area. After slightly exceeding the initial point at X for the pattern and triggering my stop loss, many of these reversals would reverse shortly thereafter, usually at the 1.13 extension of the structure. Again, the defining element of these situations was directly attributed to those M and W-type structures that possessed a retracement that was a 0.382 or less at the midpoint. It took some time to differentiate the structures but the more I was “whipsawed” by these patterns the more I realized that further differentiation was required in these cases. Although the special situations for this pattern will be covered in greater detail later in this material, it is important to understand that such specification is required to differentiate the similar structures. It can be very frustrating to try to trade these two types of patterns without differentiating their structures.”

The Alternate Bat Pattern™, is a precise harmonic pattern™ discovered by Scott Carney in 2003.
The pattern incorporates the 1.13XA retracement, as the defining element in the Potential Reversal Zone (PRZ).
The B point retracement must be a 0.382 retracement or less of the XA leg. The Alternate Bat pattern™ utilizes a minimum 2.0BC projection. In addition, the AB=CD pattern™ within the Alternate Bat is always extended and usually requires a 1.618 AB=CD calculation.
The Alternate Bat pattern™ is an incredibly accurate pattern that works exceptionally well in the RSI BAMM divergence setup.

Shark pattern

The Shark Pattern is a new harmonic pattern that I initially released in 2011 in my Patterns into Profits course. Although I was aware of the price structure for quite some time, I needed to refine the identification parameters to discover the best opportunities. Essentially, the pattern is the primary structure that precedes a 5-0 formation. This structure is outside the typical M and W framework. It possesses a unique formation called an Extreme Harmonic Impulse Wave that retests defined support/resistance while converging in the area of the 0.886 retracement – 1.13 extension. In all cases, the completion point must include the powerful 88.6% support/retracement as a minimum requirement. In addition, the unique extreme Harmonic Impulse Wave employs a minimum 1.618 extension. This combination with the 88.6% retracement defines a unique structure that possesses two profound harmonic measures to define the minimum level. In many cases, the price action will retest the initial starting point of the pattern and define excellent opportunities to take advantage of a market that has moved to far too fast within a limited period of time. These structures typically possess over-extended price action that utilizes the “natural” state of the Extreme Harmonic Impulse Wave which is typically categorized with reactionary trading behavior. This pattern frequently defines excellent opportunities but these reversals are often sharp and require specific management strategies to capitalize on the phenomenon. In many situations, the price action will retest the prior support/resistance level and typically result in a limited counter trend move. This structure should be handled differently than the standard M and W patterns. In fact, the overall expectations in price action should be short-lived and seek to capture the clearest opportunities. The Shark pattern yields many accurate and aggressive reactions that can be successfully traded as long as a more active management is applied

The Shark Pattern™ is dependent upon the powerful 88.6% retracement and the 113% Reciprocal Ratio, works extremely well retesting prior support/resistance points (0.886/1.13) as a strong counter-trend reaction. Represents a temporary extreme structure that seeks to capitalize on the extended nature of the Extreme Harmonic Impulse Wave.
Demands immediate change in price action character immediately following pattern completion. Extreme Harmonic Impulse Wave utilized depends upon location of 88.6% level – these are minimum requirements. Requires an active management strategy to capture high probability profit segments.
