I don't think spx has intrinsic volumes. Indexes do not have trade volume. The volume on stockcharts is "Total of the Trade Volume of All Components Within the Index".

they add the trade volumes of all individual components of SPX index for that number. They are not weighted, I think. So the volume of $SPX could be easily skewed by several actively traded components, esp. with smaller caps.
