Research in Motion Q2 Fiscal 2011 Results Announced

         * Update - After hours trading has the stock up over 7% on RIM's record profits. The Globe and Mail just posted a good article summarizing everything - read it here. It's clear a lot of the current sales and growth are coming internationally while North America is flattening out a bit with the competition from Apple and Android increasing. Listening to the Q&A though, the team seem very upbeat about the future quarters and Jim said we're going to be pleasantly surprised at DevCon, which kicks off on Sept. 27th. I can't wait! *

Research in Motion just posted their 2nd Quarter fiscal 2011 results (yes 2011 is right... that's how RIM reports. not a typo).... the investors call starts at 5pm ET so tune in if you want to hear from RIM's Co-CEO Jim Balsillie first hand on their performance (I'll be listening). You can listen here. We'll report back with more once the call is over. In the meantime, check out the press release below!

Analysts react to RIM results (zhuan)

Canadians remain more enthusiastic about the stock

David BermanIncludes correction
Friday, Sep. 17, 2010 06:32PM EDT

Single Page View Share:
Research In Motion Ltd. beat expectations with the release of its fiscal second quarter results on Thursday, but analysts aren’t exactly overjoyed. The bears remain bearish, while even the most bullish have trimmed their target prices or left them unchanged.

The split appears due to where you want to focus your attention. If near-term earnings suggest that RIM is more than capable of holding its ground against competition from Apple Inc.’s iPhone, then RIM looks like an awfully tempting buy right now.

On the other hand, some analysts continue to focus on net new subscribers, which came in below expectations and suggest that RIM is having a tough time attracting new fans.

Here’s a run-down from some analysts (by the way, the target prices along with the quote above are in U.S. dollars, since RIM also trades in New York). Curiously, Canadian analysts appear to be a lot more enthusiastic than U.S.-based analysts. Based on Bloomberg numbers for 27 analysts, the Canadians have an average target price of $88. The U.S. analysts have an average target price of $59, or more than 30 per cent lower than the Canadians.

Chris Umiastowski, TD Newcrest: “We doubt these results will immediately change any of the bear arguments on the stock, but they should drive up fiscal 2011 and possibly fiscal 2012 estimates simply given the near term strength in the story. We believe this will trigger a respectable rally in the stock." Recommendation: Action List Buy. Target: $90 (U.S.), unchanged.

Jim Suva, Citigroup: “RIMM will stop giving ASP [average sales price] and net subscriber guidance, which investors generally view as a negative as if companies had robust info they typically are not shy to share it and as companies get larger they often give provide increased disclosure, rather than less." Recommendation: Sell. Target: $47, down from $50.

RBC Capital Markets: Recommendation: Top pick (unchanged). Target: $90 (unchanged).

UBS: Recommendation: Neutral (unchanged). Target: $54 (down from $65).

CIBC: Recommendation: Sector outperform (unchanged). Target: $90 (unchanged).

JPMorgan: Recommendation: Overweight (unchanged). Target: $53 (down from $66).

Analysts cool on RIM results

Jameson Berkow, Financial Post · Friday, Sept. 17, 2010

Despite Research in Motion Ltd. beating market expectations for the first time since December 2009, analysts were mostly less than impressed with the latest earnings statement from the BlackBerry maker.

Several issued cautionary notes to investors Friday morning, citing concerns ranging from increasing competition from smartphones running Google Inc.’s Android software to an unsustainable boost in revenues from a recent share buyback.

RIM added 4.5-million new subscribers in the last fiscal quarter, 10% lower than consensus and 7% below the low end of RIM’s own estimates.

The dropoff in new subscribers was “most worrying” to Pierre Ferragu, senior research analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein, who maintained an underperform rating for RIM stock with a price target of US$40 per share. He contends that RIM’s expectation to add more than five million new subscribers by the next quarter may be “far too optimistic.”

In a clear sign that the smartphone market is becoming increasingly competitive, RIM said in a conference call with investors Thursday evening that it would no longer be forecasting new subscriber figures and would stop reporting them entirely after the company’s next quarterly earnings statement in December and the rising market share of Apple Inc.’s iPhone.

UBS cut its price target to US$54 per share from a previous expectation of US$65 per share over concerns that RIM failed to outline a strategy for how it intends to deal with the rise of competition from new entrants to the smartphone market utilizing the Android operating system.

The Waterloo, Ont.-based company also largely avoided responding to its waning dominance in the enterprise space. According to a survey of 200 companies in the U.S. and the U.K. conducted in August by Sanford C. Bernstein Ltd, 74% of respondents said they now let their employees use devices other than BlackBerries. For the United States alone, that number was 83%.

Jim Balsillie, RIM’s co-chief executive, explained away those figures during the Thursday evening conference call, noting that “90% of all Fortune 500 companies” are still exclusively BlackBerry users.

Taking a more optimistic viewpoint, Mike Abramsky of RBC Capital Markets explained in a note Friday that the end of new subscriber disclosure was simply a move to “harmonize” disclosure with competitors in order to “reduce share volatility around quarterly results.”

“The market may be overlooking the resiliency of RIM’s business and possibly overstating competitive threats,” he wrote, maintaining a rather high US$90 per share price target for RIM stock. “While we don’t expect [second quarter] results to dispel deep pessimism, they offer improved visibility and confidence into the strength of RIM’s franchise and sustained momentum,” wrote Mr. Abramsky.

He also pointed to strong growth outside of North America, which RIM said accounted for about 52% of its total revenues for the quarter, as a reason for investors to be less concerned about the company’s falling market share in North America.

Despite sluggish initial sales of the BlackBerry Torch 9800 in the United States, the new device is set to launch on 75 additional carriers worldwide over the next quarter, which the company expects to help maintain its strong guidance for the next quarter.

Meanwhile, Colin Gillis of BGC Partners draws attention to RIM’s US$1.3-billion share buyback over the past three months. He argues that the repurchasing of shares was responsible for the positive earnings and strong guidance, which he considers “not sustainable,” and is therefore maintaining a sell rating for RIM stock with a US$42 price target.

However, some analysts saw a potential upside to the current quarter for RIM, with several noting the expected release of the BlackPad tablet device in the coming months could help the company achieve its ambitious goals for the current quarter. Black Friday, generally the Friday following Thanksgiving Day in the United States, also occurs during this quarter and has historically been a banner sales day for BlackBerry products.

“It is hard to argue with success, and RIM clearly delivered that in [the second fiscal quarter]” wrote J.P. Morgan analyst Rod Hall in a note to clients Friday morning. “We do not believe this run is over.”
