YELLOWSTONE FALLS

This picture of the Lower Falls in Yellowstone National Park ran in the April 1922 issue, in a story called "The Scenery of North America." The falls are 308 feet high—nearly twice that of Niagara Falls.

Members of a Jewish priesthood, called the Cohanim, pray beneath prayer shawls at the Western Wall. The Cohanim can all trace their lineage to a single ancestor—which is why this photo appeared in an October 1999 story about genetics.

TINY GREEN ROOF

This photo of a San Francisco bus shelter appeared in a May 2009 story about green roofs. When utilized on a large scale, green roofs can mitigate storm water runoff, lessen the urban heat island effect, and, of course, provide a pretty change of scenery in the city.

In the Greek village of Olympos, tradition calls for a procession of icons on the Tuesday after Easter from the Orthodox church to the cemetery. This photo appeared in a December 1983 story about Olympos, home to just a few hundred people who speak a dialect that dates back to Homer.
