I was speaking last night with one of the disreputable Chicago group I have been known to hang around. The guy has been in the business as a trader for close to thirty years and he finds the current market confusing. I am hearing various versions of this from more of the more experience veteran traders I know. The market is not behaving the way it has for decades. The current market, in my opinion, is driven almost entirely by the asset allocation shift as a result of 0 interest rates and short term high frequency trading. There is little if any stock picking going on out there. There has to be a way to exploit this and I digging for it. More and more I think the answer is in smaller companies that are not in the indexes most heavily traded.
My friend also shared a remark made by an associate who is a quant trader. In this environment he says that all models are broken. The only thing working is buy the dip. |
