If you are expecting a market crash like Sep. - Oct.  2008, the best way to protect yourself is to hold cash because nothing else is safe. Some people think US treasury is safe. Wrong, back then T-bill fall along with gold. Do you really really... really believe market is going to crash? Give me break.  Market has rallied 183% since March 2009 bottom. 10-20% pull back is perfectly normal.
