The Fed buys $6.26B in Treasurys of $27.433B offered by dealers, in a reinvestment of maturing securities. It's a good-sized purchase - but consistent with plans laid out to supplement $600B in quantitative easing with continued open-market operations through the first half of next year.
This holiday season, Google (GOOG) is offering free in-flight WiFi services on three airlines, naturally, using its Chrome browser as interface. Google will pick up the tab for 700 planes in the AirTran (AAI), Delta (DAL), and Virgin America fleets, allowing Chrome to reach an estimated 15M passengers. Last year, Google's WiFi promotion included only Virgin America and 50 airports.
Google (GOOG) reportedly is shopping for big companies along the lines of YouTube and DoubleClick, its two largest acquisitions so far. “It wouldn’t surprise me to see more large opportunities for us,” its VP of corporate development says.
The gap between companies raising earnings forecasts vs. those cutting them is the largest Bloomberg has seen since 1999. Nearly 200 companies raised estimates above analysts’ projections; 130 firms cut them. “That companies themselves are expecting better profits is very positive," an analyst says. "As we see rising earnings, we’ll see improving stock prices.”
Amazon.com (AMZN) is in the diaper business, after finalizing its $500M buyout of Quidsi, which owns Diapers.com. The price was $40M less than weekend estimates, and the deal closes next month. “I’m not sure which is more unpleasant - changing diapers, paying too much for them, or running out of them,” observes Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos.
