I don't understand it. The politicians, media, etc.

Does it really mean anything? If congress treats it seriously as a real limit, why so easy to raise it? Gov should be cautious not to reach it, instead of asking for more when it's reached.
I don't hear anyone talking about not to raise it.
If everyone is ready to raise it when it's reached, why the bother to set it in the first place. You already know it's going to be lifted
Why bother to set it with all dramatic shows, the bargaining, etc.

It will be raised and no one has any doubts about it. Right now, republicans want to attach more spending cuts to it so they can score points on their "smaller government" and "less spending" grand agenda. I'd like to see if any politician can take away grandma and grandpa's nice Medicare benefits. Until that day, US will continue to borrow and spend til the end of this world.

Actually I'm not saying whether it should, or would be lifted. The point I'm trying to make is, it doesn't make sense to go through all this knowing it will be lifted anyway once it's reached.

I'm a little surprised that there is NO ONE saying we should not lift the limit. A limit is meaningless if it's there only to be lifted. No one will treat it seriously.

To me, a limit is a limit, people should treat it very seriously, especially since it's the law. Well before reach it, gov should take action not to reach it.

Of course it can be lifted occasionally, but should not be a norm that it will be lifted anyway.
