‘BlackPad’ build-up an opportunity to reduce RIM exposure: analyst

Technology blogs are ablaze Wednesday morning after the Wall Street Journal reported that RIM could unveil its answer to Apple’s iPad as early as next week. But at least one analyst is recommending investors take advantage of any stock price rise to decrease exposure.
Research In Motion’s tablet device is expected to have a 7-inch touchscreen, up to two cameras, and the usual bells and whistles such as Bluetooth and broadband connectivity. But the WSJ is also reporting that, rather than rehashing its existing Blackberry smartphone operating system, the BlackPad (as the device has been dubbed), will have a completely new operating system.
The maker of the BlackBerry certainly needs to gain some momentum in its favour. Although it posted strong quarterly results last week, the company’s stock has declined from $71.03 during the start of the year to yesterday’s close of $48.29 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
Disputes with countries like India and the United Arab Emirates over access to RIM’s Blackberry encryption haven’t helped the company’s stock price either.
But analyst Sameet Kanade of Northern Securities said that might change in the next few days — briefly, at least. RIM’s annual developer conference is next week (Sept. 27-30), where the BlackPad announcement is expected to happen.
Mr. Kanade said that whether the BlackPad is announced at the conference or not, RIM’s stock is likely to see a share price uptick leading up to the event.
And that presents a great opportunity to decrease exposure. Why? In Mr. Kanade’s view, despite taking the right step with the BlackPad, there are still key shortcomings in RIM’s product portfolio.
“We continue to reiterate our concerns regarding RIM’s competitive positioning within the Smartphone segment and resultant impact on the top line,” the analyst wrote. “We do not expect a “BlackPad” to resolve our top-line concern, as the issues at hand are more fundamental, in our opinion.”
He goes on to add:
“With lack of significant investment in development of a strong ecosystem which drives adoption across both enterprise and consumer segments, supported by an aggressive acquisition strategy, we believe RIM’s platform may be relegated to a Tier-II status.”
Mr. Kanade’s recommendation is contingent on RIM’s stock price actually trending upward prior to the start of the Sept. 27 event. Northern Securities expects it to be as strong as 5% or more.
Of course, if that doesn’t happen, you can hang on to RIM shares. Because who knows — the BlackPad could end up being a game changer.
