Sales on Black Friday 2008 increased 3.0 percent versus Black Friday 2007.

BLACK FRIDAY RETAIL SALES INCREASE 0.5 PERCENT AS COMPARED TO 2008
CHICAGO – November 29, 2008 – The traditional kick off to the holiday shopping season was a rather mixed bag as Black Friday spending showed a slight 0.5 percent increase versus the same period in 2008. According to ShopperTrak spending totaled $10.660 billion as compared to $10.606 billion on Black Friday 2008 – a day that was surprisingly strong last season despite economic turmoil and the eventual spending lull seen throughout the rest of the holiday shopping season. Sales on Black Friday 2008 increased 3.0 percent versus Black Friday 2007.

While retailers might have been hoping door buster sales and “limited time” promotions would boost the sales levels even further, ShopperTrak co-founder Bill Martin believes even a slight increase is a positive sign for the industry.

“We’ve seen a gradual retail sales increase over the last two weeks and with Black Friday’s performance it looks like November will be a positive month for retailers compared to last year which is an encouraging sign,” Mr. Martin said. “As highlighted in 2008, Friday’s relatively strong performance isn’t always a bellwether for the entire season, but we believe the 1.6 percent increase we originally predicted for the holiday season remains intact.”

Regionally, the West lead the way with a 4.7 percent retail sales rise over 2008, followed by the Midwest (+1.3 percent), South (+0.6 percent) and Northeast (-4.9 percent).

Black Friday shopper traffic was heavy throughout the country as consumers responded to early openings and promotions which enticed shoppers to buy as there were no guarantees the heavy price cutting would continue following Thanksgiving weekend. ShopperTrak’s Black Friday traffic information will be released early next week.

“Traffic seemed to follow a familiar pattern this year as retailers were blitzed early in the day by smart shoppers capitalizing on discounted merchandise, then things began to slow as the day progressed,” said Bill Martin. “Looking ahead, we should see some strength early on Saturday, but things will begin to taper off later in the day which will most likely continue into Sunday.”

Developed by ShopperTrak, the NRSE provides a nationwide benchmark of retail sales. It is derived from the U.S. Commerce Department's GAFO (general
merchandise, apparel, furniture, sporting goods, electronics, hobby, books and other related store sales) statistic, as well as ShopperTrak's proprietary industry intelligence on shopper movement and sales statistics. This gives retailers, investors and policy makers the most accurate and timely information on consumer trends available today.

That's make sense. I only earned several hundred $ last year from stock. But I Earned much more than that this year. That would be the same to the most people including HT. So most people spent more this year than last year becuase of that.
