Starbucks on Thursday reported quarterly earnings that topped expectations, but revenue missed Wall Street's estimates.

The coffee giant posted first-quarter fiscal 2016 earnings of 46 cents per share on $5.37 billion in sales.

Wall Street expected Starbucks to post earnings of 45 cents per share on $5.39 billion in revenue, according to a consensus estimate from Thomson Reuters.

Its shares fell nearly 2 percent in after-hours trading.
