Nice article, i think it missed an important cause...economic...
most of the protestors are young, in their early 20s. The dissatisfaction that sparked the protests extends well beyond unhappiness with Leung and political reforms. Incomes have stagnated while living costs have soared. Hong Kong's wealth gap is one of the world's highest, while average incomes among those under age 24 are less than 8,000 Hong Kong dollars (about $1,000) a month.
This has many similarities with Occupy Wall Street. Young people in Hong Kong are facing the same problems young Americans are facing - they want good paying jobs and career advancement but can't find it this day in age.
