yes, you are right: "Gore was awarded 30K options for joining Apple’s board in 2003, but those were at a price of $14.95 per share."
But any trader could buy at the same, right?
Only trader could not predicate AAPL's future at that time.

no, the public can not buy those option. Those options are issues internally and not tradable. that is like company incentive for the executive or employee. if the stock does good on the long run, he/she will benefit, like a bonus.

Institutional players can do it, but individual like us? Where can you buy an option in 2003 that expires in 2013?  A 10 year leap option is not available for us.
