Actually, sports for competition and sports for health are never being the samething.
IMHO, sports for competition are mostly harmful for your health. Professional athlates have more health problems when they grow old. Their average life expectancy is lower than average population.

I don't think so, you can increase the resistance, also use higher slope, you can run fast too. The machine will tell you how many cal you burn per minute. Guess what, I am a elliptical runner. :)
