EUREKA, Calif. -- A former Humboldt County pastor will serve an 18-year prison sentence for molesting two of his adopted daughters.
Fifty-year-old Dino Cardelli pleaded guilty in June to multiple sex abuse charges and 25 counts of violating a court order not to contact the victim.
Cardelli led Arcata's Calvary Chapel for 15 years before resigning last September.
Prosecutors say Cardelli began molesting the first child when she was 13 and would convince her to participate by reading her Bible verses. They say he tried multiple times to convince her not to cooperate with authorities.
Prosecutors later identified another adopted daughter whom he molested three times.
The Times-Standard of Eureka (http://bit.ly/r1m84E) reports that Judge Bruce Watson on Monday handed down the maximum sentence allowed under the plea agreement. The judge said Cardelli betrayed the trust of his daughters and the community.
