USSR collapsed because it lost 3 major wars within a 5 year period:
1. Cold War;
2. Afghanistan War;
3. Iraq War.
The last one is especially damaging as it exposed the Soviet military as a paper tiger. The military was completely demoralized as a result and would no longer obey orders, which manifested itself during the 1991 coup.

The US may have trouble suppressing insurgencies, but to defeat any conventional military, it has proven to be more than competent.

    Ok. I guess this discussion has been over-stretched, just to add some last points before I end my part.

    Military is nothing but an extension of politics, which is again nothing but an extension of economy. Hence an unsustainable economical system can't be revived by merely military power.

USSR never fought in Iraq and cold war was not even a war. USSR collapsed because its socialistic system failed and losed to free markets.
