I keep getting private messages on the various shorthand I use to refer to institutions in the S&P pit update I provide through Cobra's daily thread.
Here is a list of them, not necessarily comprehensive - but should give you enough information for majority of the players in the market
GS/Goldman - Goldman Sach
MS/Morgan - Morgan Stanley
JP - JP Morgan
Chi Corp/Chicago - ex ABN AMRO
Solley/Saloman - Saloman Brothers (now part of Citi)
ML/Merrill - Merrill Lynch (part of BAC)
Swiss/Swissie - Union Bank of Switzerland
Devonshire - retail paper and used to be called Fidelity
SB/Smith/Smith Barney - part of Citi
By the way, there is no way to know whether the institutions are trading their own accounts or on behalf of their clients.
Isn't Smith Barney already sold to MS?

I think it's now a joint venture between Citi and Morgan Stanley. However, I keep thinking of Salomon Smith Barney even though that name was abandoned long ago.
is "No 1" the biggest local, the guy occupies 10% or so es volume?

I don't know what the relative volume No 1 has in the pit. However, he's able to swing 100 cars all by himself. I have absolutely no idea how much ES volume he accounts for.
