Cook County probation officer charged in murder-for-hire plot

A 20-year veteran gang intelligence officer with the Cook County adult probation department was ordered held on $500,000 bail today after being charged with trying to hire a hit man to kill his wife, officials said.

Michael Dickerson, 47, was charged with solicitation of murder for hire and faces between 20 and 40 years in prison if convicted, Cook County State's Atty. Anita Alvarez said in a press release. He was arrested early Tuesday.

According to prosecutors Dickerson went to the home of a man on April 21 and told him, "I need someone to go away ...I need someone to go away and not come back."

At that point Dickerson provided the man with an envelope containing information about the make and model of his wife's car, a description of where the car would be parked and when it would arrive at the location. The envelope also had the would-be hit man's name written on it, prosecutors said.

But unbeknown to Dickerson, the would-be hit man approached his lawyer about the officer and the lawyer and his client met on May 27 with members of the Cook County state's attorney's office along with Cook County sheriff's officials.

On May 28, after a court order was issued to allow meetings between Dickerson and the man to be recorded and videotaped, Dickerson and the man met and Dickerson provided him with a description of a new car his wife was driving along with new license plates. Investigators were able to determine that Dickerson's target was his wife and that Dickerson had provided the man with information about her daily commute, prosecutors said.

On June 5, police recorded conversations between the man and Dickerson where the man told Dickerson that the target was with another woman at the spot where Dickerson said his wife would be. Dickerson allegedly told the man, "The driver is the one."

Dickerson then typed out a dollar amount on his phone and told the man, "That's yours."

According to prosecutors the man said, "Make it look like a robbery, after you shoot her, I got you."

After Dickerson was arrested Dickerson told investigators that "his marriage was messed up and he wanted out of it."

According to prosecutors the Dickerson told investigators he was the beneficiary of his wife's life insurance policy and promised to pay $1,000 to the would-be hit the money after the woman's life insurance paid out to him.

Officials said that early today as Dickerson was being processed and was allowed a telephone call he called a deputy chief of the probation department and told the deputy chief to come to court on and tell the judge, "That this is how we roll, tell him I was on a long term undercover investigation...the police are trying to frame me."

But prosecutors said that the deputy chief was interviewed and denied that Dickerson was on any undercover operation. The official also said that the would-be hit-man was not a target of any investigation.

According to county records, Dickerson was hired in April 1990 and earned over $75,000 a year. Officials from the Cook County adult probation office could not be reached for comment.

Dickerson appeared before Cook County Judge Donald Panarese Jr.  who ordered him held on bail and also ordered him to stay away from the informant, turn in his passport and any guns.
