I guess the-behind-scene-story may go like this: She/he might have a name same as one of the top "blacklist" celebrities. The custom official recognized that name immediately, and then vaguely thought she/he looked like one of the pokerfaces but was not sure --- maybe he/she did facial surgery ..? so invited him/her to drink a cup of tea ... and at the end cited this was "a national secret." Pure guess ...
He/she could make a stronger case of his/her arguement if his/her accompanying Chinese travellers were also repeatedly checked seperately. If not, it might be a unique case unfortunate to him/her due to his/her not so "welcome" name.
When applying for green cards in the US, "name check" could last for years for some Chinese but only months for others. That is not necessarily a discrimination. Bad luck, probably. |
