Bernanke moves closer to confirmation
Democrats set key vote for Thursday

ASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke moved a step closer to Senate confirmation for a second term Tuesday, as Senate Democrats set a key vote for Thursday on his nomination.

In the first vote to end debate on the nomination, Bernanke will need 60-votes. Analysts expected that Bernanke will be able to clear this hurdle.

Bernanke's nomination hit a speed bump last week when it appeared that Democrats might withhold their support for the Fed chief in the wake of the surprise election of Republican Scott Brown in Massachusetts.

The White House has taken a tougher stance against big banks in the wake of the Massachusetts vote, and observers saw the possibility that Bernanke would be hurt by the new political climate.

But President Barack Obama stuck behind his choice. The White House and other Bernanke supporters worked over the weekend to get the nomination back on track.

Support for Bernanke has steadily grown this week, as both Republicans and Democrats who were previously undecided announced they planned to support him.

Under Senate rules, a final vote, requiring a simple majority, would follow after a period for debate.

Bernanke has been holding private meetings with Senators during the week to solidify support.

Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., told reporters after meeting Bernanke that the Fed chairman had been "very frank and candid" about mistakes.

Opposition to Bernanke has come from both the most conservative members of the Senate and the most liberal.

They accuse Bernanke of not policing Wall Street vigorously, allowing speculative practices that ultimately brought the economy to its knees.

Supporters credit Bernanke for bringing the economy back from the brink of another Great Depression.
