Dividend is distributed based on X-Date(Execution date). You have to hold to X-Date to qualify for dividend. However, on X-date, the dividend is reflected in stock price.
For example a stock is $31 the day before x-date. If the stock should open at $31 assuming the stock has value of $32 as previous as-of closed price.
If dividend date is 1/7, you have to have stock on 1/5 and hold it until 1/7 to have a dividend. after that you can sell it if want.
