Confirmed: Corporate Profits Grew at an Anemic Pace in Q2

Now that second quarter earnings season is officially over, what did we learn? In short, corporate profit growth was exceptionally weak, growing at a rate of just 0.81% year over year, the slowest rate since the third quarter of 2009, according to S&P Capital IQ. That’s down from growth of about 7% in the first quarter.

Revenue grew at a rate of just 1.91%. Industrial stocks posted the most robust earnings growth, with profits rising 13.5%.

Most companies were able to beat analysts’ expectations, but the bar for many of them had been set so low that hurdling it was no great achievement.

Companies have been able to grow earnings since the start of the recession on cost-cutting and overseas sales. But those factors are not providing as much of a boost anymore. As for the third quarter, companies have been routinely cutting expectations for third quarter earnings.

“Of the 101 companies that have provided guidance for Q3 2012, 72 are negative, 22 are positive and 7 are in-line, producing a N/P ratio of 3.3,” according to S&P Capital IQ.
